Etching on Sterling Silver Reading Creating Rolling Mill Plates 2 minutes

While the etching process is the same for both copper based alloys and sterling silver, the etching solution differs depending on the metal you choose. For this One Day Workshop, students will be working in Copper and Brass flat sheet.

Choosing Your Metal / for this workshop - you have 2 choices

    1.    Etching for a finished piece – In this case, I recommend using sheet metal no thinner than 20g

    2.    Creating texture plates for a rolling mill – If you’d like to make reusable texture plates, 16g yellow brass sheet metal is best. Rio sells 12x6in sheets and Contenti sells 12x12 sheets of yellow brass.

Once you’ve decided what your end goal is:

YOU'LL NEED TO CHOOSE A DESIGN AND SEND IT TO BETH AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS BELOW & BRING YOUR OWN SHEET METAL TO THE WORKSHOP!

Preparing Your Design

To personalize your etched pieces, you’ll need to find patterns or images you’d like to transfer onto the metal. A great way to find patterns is to search Google for “black and white [your preferred style] pattern” (e.g., mid-century modern, floral, geometric). Save your selected images as JPEG files and send them to Beth via email or text before the workshop. This way, Beth will have them ready to scale to fit your design.
